Here's a selection of some original hip hop. I mean we're talking block parties, popping & locking and the start of rap here, proper old school stuff. Sugar Hill Records was the name of a rap music record label that was founded in 1979 by husband and wife Joe and Sylvia Robinson with Milton Malden and financial funding of Morris Levy, the owner of Roulette Records. The download has some of the main pioneers of the early hip hop movement including Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel & of course The Sugarhill Gang.

Here's a 2 disc DJ mix that should help with your new year's eve celebrations. The first disc is my latest drum & bass / soundclash mix with a selection of my new tunes. The second disc has a few different genres starting with 20ish minutes of cutting and scratching over some classic hip hop and electro beats. It then shifts into some breakbeat and classic drum & bass before finishing up with some more turntablism over a few laid back Ninja Tunes. Disc 2 wasn't done as a 'live' set as I spliced together the different sections using Audacity (though each section is a live mix but I don't suppose you care really :).

Here's a mix of original electro that was done by the Freestylers. This is a great selection of proper old skool electro with a few of the classics included. The Freestylers have been around since 96 when DJs & dance music producers Matt Cantor, Aston Harvey & (initially) Andrew Galea joined forces. Here's another mix from DJ Freestyle. This is mainly a hip hop mix which includes artists such as Run DMC, Nas and Souls Of Mischief. It runs for around 75 minutes and has loads of nice, head-nodding beats so download and enjoy. Freestyle will be playing at Recess at the Playtime Bar in Islington on Saturday 25th September. Recess runs from 8pm to 2 am and will cost you absolutely nothing to get in, which is always a bonus. The Recess evenings were set up by Spinback Promotions and the following dates are booked:
This mix is made up of hip hop, soul, funk and plenty of other laid back beats. Mixed in 2010 by DJ Freestyle from London, it was done to help promote a new club evening being setup by Spinback Promotions. The night's are being held at the Playtime Bar in Islington from 8pm to 2am and is free entry. The music will be club classics, funk, hip hop, soulful house and R&B from the resident DJs Freestyle, Compact & Templar.

Well seeing as it's my birthday today and I've reached the wise old age of erm... 42 I think ;) I thought I'd post up a collection of some of my favourite songs of all time. There's going to be many different genre's but that's just a reflection of my taste in music. If you click on the band link it will open all the posts for that band so you can hear more of them.
Here is a bunch of remixes from De La Soul. Most of the tracks originally appeared on the 3 Feet High & Rising album which was released in 1989. De La Soul are a hip hop/rap group who formed in 1987 on Long Island, New York. Lyrically they spoke about peace & harmony with a good slice of humour which was pretty different to a lot of rap bands at the time. They introduced the concept of "the Daisy Age" which is actually an acronym for "Da Inner Sound Y'all" and their single and album covers were decorated with brightly coloured flowers and the like. This got the group labelled as the new breed of hippy and so they've tried to change their style on each of their subsequent releases.
The group is actually made up of three main members, Posdnuos (Sound Sop backwards), Trugoy The Dove (Yogurt backwards) and P.A. Pasemaster Mase. They had a massive influence on hip hop at the time and have worked with artists like The Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah and the Gorillaz.
