Ganja Reggae Selection

Here's a selection of reggae and dub music that should provide a nice soundtrack to your next sesh. I've included a few of the songs that have been sampled in various drum & bass / jungle tunes so you should recognise a few of them. A lot of these were originally released on Trojan Records but I've also thrown in a few others for your delectation.

Black Uhuru Collection

Here is a collection of tracks from the excellent reggae band, Black Uhuru. Black Uhuru are a Jamaican reggae band probably best known for their hits "Shine Eye Gal", "Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner", "Sinsemilla", "Solidarity" and "What Is Life?". They were the first group to win a Grammy in the reggae category when it was introduced in 1985. They originally formed in 1972 as Uhuru (the Swahili word for freedom). Tracks 11 & 12 aren't perfect quality but my vinyl is a bit scratchy (nothing major though).

Bob Marley - Remixed And Unmixed

This is another two disc download but this time it's a collection of tracks by reggae genius Bob Marley. The first disc contains a selection of remixes from a number of artists, including bands like Cypress Hill, Sheep On Drugs and Astralasia. The second disc is made up of the original versions of the tracks on disc one and there's even a few bonus songs thrown in for good measure. You can't really go far wrong with a bit of Bob Marley but it's also good to hear some different versions.

Aswad - Live And Direct

Here is another live show, this time from reggae masters Aswad. This show was recorded in 1983 at the Notting Hill Carnival and is from when they were at their very best, well that's what I reckon anyway. Though saying that I did see them play live a couple of years ago and they were still great and played a lot of the old classics. So even though the weather this summer was a washout, grab this and get yourself a taste of sunshine.

DJ Switch - Dubside (Reggae / Dub Mix)

This is another reggae and dub mix from DJ Switch. This was done on the 22nd of April 2011 and contains a mixture of new and old reggae tunes. Unfortunately I haven't got the track listing but it has tracks from artists like Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Junior Marvin and King Tubby. The last ten minutes of the mix was actually done by me and is a couple of tracks from Linton Kwesi Johnson and Scientist. So if dub reggae is your thing give this a listen.

DJ Embryo - The Promised Land Mix

Here's another one of my drum & bass / jungle mix's. I did this one in April and it's basically a mix of the last few tunes I've bought which is why both versions of promised land are on there. Though the last tune is basically me messing around with some scratching :) The mix goes on for just over an hour and if you want to burn a copy to CD I've included some covers in the download file.

K-Jah West is a reggae radio station hosted by DJs Marshall Peters & Johnny Lawton (actually voiced by Lowell Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare respectively). Ska Collection

Here's a selection of some classic ska tunes. As well as a lot of the early ska from labels like Trojan Records there's also a few tracks taken from the two tone label. Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. It combines elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues and is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the upbeat. Some of the tracks aren't perfect quality seeing as they were taken from pretty scratchy vinyl but considering they're around 40 years old what can you expect :) Most of the tracks are 320kbps mp3's except for 4, 17, 22 & 26 which are 192kbps.

DJ Switch - Under Mi Dub Mix

Well I hope you had a nice christmas and new year and let's start off 2011 with a big ol' reggae mix. This one is from DJ Switch and was recorded in November 2010. It has a mixture of old and new stuff from people like Lee 'Scratch' Perry, The Clash and Barrington Levy. It's mainly reggae but there's also a little bit of ska, dub and dubstep thrown in for good measure. The download is all in one big 320kbps mp3 file. I haven't got the tracklisting but it starts with Bankrobber by The Clash, then a bit of Aswad and continues on from there :)

DJ Embryo - Soundclash Session

I've been busy mixing recently so here's another drum & bass/junglist mix for you. This one is about an hour long and another good one... well if you like that 'soundclash' style, which I obviously do :) I'd only planned it to go on for about 40 minutes (up to No Sensi Today) but I got carried away and started being more 'experimental' with the mixing for the last 20 minutes ;) I'll do it again at some point without me fucking around (and get rid of a couple of annoying bits). DJ Embryo - Hail Up The Lion Mix

Here's another mix that I did the other day. This one is pretty much a 'junglist' mix, heavily tinged with reggae breaks and pounding bass & rhythms. It has some absolute classics from the genre and it may be my favourite/best mix I've ever done (even if I do say so myself :) The Prodigy track is a bit out of place but I bought the vinyl the other day and it's a excellent version so I started the mix with it. It's nearly an hour long and there are CD covers included in the download. I wouldn't normally do this but this mix is highly recommended ;) so download it now.

Seeing as I'm going to see Aswad supported by a ska band The Dualers in Watford this Friday I thought I'd upload some dub reggae. Hopefully Aswad will do some of their early stuff rather than the later, more poppy reggae. I've never heard of The Dualers but I do like a bit of ska.

This is just a collection of dub tunes from a few different artists. I've even included the CD cover if you want to burn this :) All the tracks are in mp3 format with a bitrate of 256kbps.
