Earth are an experimental drone/doom band from Seattle, Washington. I’d never even heard of them till a couple of months ago when my brother said I should give Earth 2 a listen... All I can say is that it’s like doing acid without any of the messy business of actually taking drugs. This isn’t music for playing at dinner parties or a friend’s wedding, think headphones, darkness, strangeness and otherworldly experiences. Highly recommended.
Earth have been around since 1990 and are led by guitarist Dylan Carlson. They are pioneers of Drone Doom (I know, I’d never heard of it before) – which, apparently, is an experimental offshoot of doom metal, characterized by droning, minimalistic, lengthy, and repetitive structures. Earth 2 appears to be the most challenging album as their style does appear to vary from album to album with some of the tracks from the latest CD sounding almost like Pink Floyd in places.

Here’s a band that never seemed to get the recognition they deserved, musically proficient with a sneering kind of Dead Kennedys feel to them. Coming from West Virginia in the US, Th’Inbred’s two albums & one EP consist of topical songs and instrumentals played in a disciplined form of sharply thrashed hardcore punk-jazz-rock which can turn tight melodic corners on a screeching dime and make abrupt rhythm shifts amid a hailstorm of free-fire guitar power. Very much in a Minutemen/Blind Idiot God vein the sharp-witted anarchists angrily attack Christianity, Satanism, hardcore ideologues, apathy, American policy, etc. and back it up with crisply organized noise. Unfortunately they folded at the end of 1987, just prior to the release of Kissin’ Cousins but the drummer (one of the best drummers I’ve ever heard btw.) Billy Atwell continued on making music and has worked with the likes of the Rhythm Pigs, John Zorn & The Kronos Quartet as well as producing film and theatre scores.

A friend of mine (Hi Al :) has just produced a show for Rob Da Bank on Radio 1 which is available via podcast. It's about why we like music, from the effects of rhythm on the brain to why some songs make us sad and some make us happy. It's a load of interviews with scientists, a film composer and the Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich cut together with some lovely tunes (mostly ones chosen by Alice except the Jamiroquai track... which she strongly denies having any links to).

Well seeing as I've found myself listening to lots of stoner music recently here's a sample of a band called The Plight. I went down to Brighton to see them last year (on the strength of hearing 1 track [Ball & Chain]) and they were fucking excellent.
Take some Thin Lizzy, add a little Black Sabbath and mix with some current UK hardcore and you should get the idea. I think they've only released one EP (just 6 tracks unfortunately) called Black Summer but if you like this selection you should buy the whole album. I just hope they get back in the studio and release a full album. If you get a chance to see them live I recommend it :)

Patrik Fitzgerald was an acoustic folk punker I first heard during the early days of punk.
