Motörhead - No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith

Here's another classic live show for your enjoyment. This time it's those old rockers Motörhead and the No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith album, released in June 1981. They were formed in 1975 by bassist and singer Lemmy (Ian Kilmister) after he got kicked out of Hawkwind for, as he says, "doing the wrong drugs".

With the exception of "Iron Horse / Born To Lose" which was from a 1980 show, this was recorded at the Leeds and Newcastle shows during the Short, Sharp Pain In The Neck five-date tour in 1981. The name of the tour was a reference to the injury sustained by Phil Taylor when he was dropped on his head during some after-show horseplay. Despite the title of the album, the London venue the Hammersmith Odeon was not played on the tour. The actual shows were:

• 27 March 1981: West Runton Pavilion, Norfolk
• 28 March 1981: Queens Hall, Leeds
• 29 March 1981: City Hall, Newcastle
• 30 March 1981: City Hall, Newcastle
• 03 April 1981: Maysfield Leisure Centre, Belfast

I saw them play on their tenth anniversary gig at the Hammersmith Odeon and they were excellent. This album captures their live sound perfectly and even if you've heard it before it's well worth another listen. This is actually from a later re-release which includes some bonus tracks not on the original album.

The Ramones - It's Alive

It's Alive is a live album by the American punk band the Ramones. It was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre, London, on December 31, 1977, and released in April 1979. The title is a reference to the 1974 horror movie of the same name. During their U.K. tour of 1977 & 1978 there were four concerts recorded, but this performance was chosen because everyone considered it the best of the shows.

Gong - Magick Brother

Here's another Gong download for you. This time it's their 1970 debut album, featuring Gilli Smyth and Daevid Allen. It has also been listed as Magick Brother, Mystic Sister.

Not every track on the album is a classic but there's definitely some good stuff for you here... and I reckon it must be the first mention of the infamous Pot Head Pixies ;)

Get Your Lie Straight: A Galaxy Of Funk (Old Post New Links)

This compilation anthologises some of the best grooves that Fantasy Record’s subsidiary Galaxy issued in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Galaxy naturally focused on the bluesy, earthier style of soul popular in that region, a sound exemplified by the local smash ‘Foxy Girls In Oakland’ by Rodger Collins. Other local acts on Galaxy were vocalist Lenny Williams, later to find fame with Tower Of Power, and blues singers JJ Malone and Tiny Powell, both of whose funky waxings for the label are represented here. Instrumental grooves from Merl Saunders and The Right Kind, and obscure nuggets from further notables like The Debonaires and Loleatta Holloway complete this compilation.

This is another reggae and dub mix from DJ Switch. This was done on the 22nd of April 2011 and contains a mixture of new and old reggae tunes. Unfortunately I haven't got the track listing but it has tracks from artists like Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Junior Marvin and King Tubby. The last ten minutes of the mix was actually done by me and is a couple of tracks from Linton Kwesi Johnson and Scientist. So if dub reggae is your thing give this a listen.

Can't you just feel all the love in the air as half the country prepares for that most special of occasions, a royal wedding. Unfortunately though I'm in that other 50% of the population who really couldn't give a fuck if two pampered little rich kids get married. Reggae Selection (GTA K-Jah West)

Well seeing as I've just posted up one Grand Theft Auto radio station I may as well do another of theirs. This time it's K-Jah West from the San Andreas game and once again it's chock full of great tunes. K-Jah West is a reggae radio station hosted by DJs Marshall Peters & Johnny Lawton (actually voiced by Lowell Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare respectively). Latin Jazz Collection (GTA Radio)

Time for some latin flavour so here's a selection of tracks that was originally a radio station on the game Grand Theft Auto - Vice City. There's some real funky stuff on here but it's nicely interspersed with some more 'classic' latin sounds. To be honest with you I probably would have never listened to these tracks if it wasn't for the game so remember kids, video games can also be educational as well as fun ;)


This is definitely best listened to when you're chillin' in the sunshine with a few friends, a few drinks and a few hours to kill.
