You may recognise the Tom Scott tracks from the Nine Lives Of Fritz The Cat movie and if anyone has a copy of the soundtrack album Id love to get a copy (Addendum: Just did some searching and found that the album was never released and the two tracks here are the only items available - they were released on a single in 1974).

True Facts

I've been lazy putting up any music lately, the only excuse I have is that it was my birthday and there was vodka to be drunk... but I still haven't posted any music so in the meantime here's some interesting true rock facts...

THE DAMNED IN SCI-FI NERD SHOCKER
At the end of Smash It Up (Parts 1 & 2) by The Damned there is a voice that repeats to fade saying "Nibbled to death by an okapi". Turns out that this is a sample from The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy radio series. I only discovered this when I was listening to Hitch Hikers the other night and I heard it.

MOVE OVER ROVER AND LET JIMI TAKE OVER
During Fire by Jimi Hendrix he says "move over Rover and let Jimi take over". Apparently this phrase was first said by bassist Noel Redding's mum at her house in Folkestone on New Years Eve. Jimi asked her if he could stand next to the fireplace to warm himself, of course she agreed but her dog was in the way, hence the line, "Aw, move over, Rover, and let Jimi take over..."

LINK REMOVED - SMOKE ON THE WATER
Deep Purple were in Montreux, Switzerland to do some recording. On the eve of a recording session there was a concert in the Montreux casino's theatre by Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention. In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire. Somebody in the audience had fired a flare gun into the ceiling, at which point the rattan covering started to burn. The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel across the lake.

Bet you didn't know all of them ;)

Anyway there is some funk on the horizon so check back if that's the bag you're into :)

60s Proto Punk Collection (ORIG POST)

This is a collection of 60's proto-punk/garage rock songs mainly taken from the albums Nuggets and the Pebbles Series. Not all the tracks are really proto punk, things like Indian Rope Man are just classic 60s psychedelia... which is no bad thing.

The Pebbles series describes the recordings on their albums as "Original punk rock and psychedelic rock from the fabulous Sixties." These recordings were primarily made by the numerous American bands that were formed in the wake of the British Invasion. Essentially referring to the young age and lack of sophistication of the musicians, the term "punk rock" was coined (or at least popularized) by Lenny Kaye, who was involved in compiling the original Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968.

Rudimentary Peni - Black Side Live

BEST. BAND. EVER. Well one of them anyway :)

Rudimentary Peni emerged from the British anarcho-punk scene in the early eighties as one of the most novel and recognizable acts of the era. Lead singer/guitarist Nick Blinko is notorious for his witty macabre lyrics and dark pen-and-ink artwork, prominently featured on all of Rudimentary Peni's albums. Blinko is also rumored to have written the band's Pope Adrian 37th Psychristiatric album whilst resident in a psychiatric hospital. Bassist Grant Matthews has also written a number of songs for the band, though his lyrics primarily focus on sociopolitical themes.

In Maximum RocknRoll, issue #237 (February 2003), Matthews explains how he came up with the name of the band: "When I was at school studying biology, we were told that in the fetal stage the clitoris is a rudimentary penis." (text taken from Wikipedia)

This download is a live 7" bootleg from probably 81 or 82. All the tracks are 320kbps but it is a live show so don't expect studio quality.

Heres the tracklisting...
01) Cosmetic Plague
02) Blind Dogs

04) B-Ward
05) Zero Again
06) Inside
07) Media Person

The Bears

This is just a few tracks by a band called The Bears. Hailing from Watford around 1977 they only released a few singles and a live LP which was a real shame as they were a great band. They were formed by guitarist George Gill from Wire. The rest of the band comprised Kris Kershaw (again ex Wire), Ron West on Bass, Cally Cameron on Drums and Mick North on Vocals. This is a copy of their first single, On Me & another track from the second single.

Here's the tracklisting (All tracks are 256kbps mp3)...
