This groovy little selection of funk was put together by Solid Jackson, a good friend of mine. As well as including some tracks from a few of the usual suspects like James Brown and Funkadelic Mr Jackson also made sure there are a number of songs from some of the lesser known artists.
So if you want to listen to some funky grooves then this download is for you. Enjoy.

This compilation anthologises some of the best grooves that Fantasy Record’s subsidiary Galaxy issued in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Galaxy naturally focused on the bluesy, earthier style of soul popular in that region, a sound exemplified by the local smash ‘Foxy Girls In Oakland’ by Rodger Collins. Other local acts on Galaxy were vocalist Lenny Williams, later to find fame with Tower Of Power, and blues singers JJ Malone and Tiny Powell, both of whose funky waxings for the label are represented here. Instrumental grooves from Merl Saunders and The Right Kind, and obscure nuggets from further notables like The Debonaires and Loleatta Holloway complete this compilation.

This is another compilation that I took from a radio station (IF99) on Grand Theft Auto IV. This one is a collection of afro-beat artists and once again this download is the full tracks rather than the actual game version. This has tracks from all the main 'afro-beat' artists including Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti & Femi Kuti and it's interspersed with some of the more 'standard' funk artists. Not all the tracks are classics but all in all it's an excellent compilation.
Here's the tracklisting (Minimum 256kbps)...
01) New Bell [Manu Dibango]
02) Zombie [Fela Kuti]
03) Who Is He And What Is He To You [Creative Source]
04) You Can't Hide Love [Hummingbird]
05) Just Kissed My Baby [The Meters]
06) Truth Don Die [Femi Kuti]
07) Galaxy [War]
08) Home is Where The Hatred Is [Gil Scott-Heron]
09) Give The People What They Want [The O'Jays]
10) Livin' It Up [Mandrill]
11) Sorrow, Tears & Blood [Fela Kuti]
12) A Chance for Peace [Lonnie Liston Smith]
Here's a collection of jazz fusion tracks. I actually got the track listing from a radio station on Grand Theft Auto IV (Fusion FM) but this has the complete tracks (with none of the Fusion FM adverts etc.). If you don't know the originals then you'll probably recognise them as they've been sampled by bands like Massive Attack & Dr Dre. I got track 8 from the GTA IV soundtrack but I've done some editing and removed the DJ talkover.
Here's the tracklisting (Minimum 256kbps except 192 on track 8)...
01) Stratus [Billy Cobham]
02) Stomp [Marc Moulin]
03) Heavy Tune [Gong]
04) Holy Thursday [David Axelrod]
05) Knucklehead [Grover Washington Jr.]
06) Funk In The Hole [Roy Ayers]
07) Sneakin' In The Back [Tom Scott & The LA Express]
08) Pokusa [Aleksander Maliszewski] (GTA IV Edit)
09) The Edge [David McCallum]
10) Raisins [Ryo Kawasaki]
OK, sorry for the missing week but I was on holiday. Anyway a friend of mine recently pointed me in the direction of Max Tannone and his Ghost Funk project. It was released in July 2011 and pairs Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah, with vintage African funk, high-life, and psychedelic rock music. It really is an excellent release and I highly recommend it for listeners of the funky persuasion. When I originally got the email I knew I recognized the name and it turns out he also did another excellent remix project called Dub Kweli which is also pretty high on my playlist. Basically if you haven't heard these releases you should go and check out his site.

Time for some latin flavour so here's a selection of tracks that was originally a radio station on the game Grand Theft Auto - Vice City. There's some real funky stuff on here but it's nicely interspersed with some more 'classic' latin sounds. To be honest with you I probably would have never listened to these tracks if it wasn't for the game so remember kids, video games can also be educational as well as fun ;)
This is definitely best listened to when you're chillin' in the sunshine with a few friends, a few drinks and a few hours to kill.
Here's the tracklisting (192kbps)...
01) Super Strut [Deodato]
02) A Gozar Con Mi Combo [Cachao]
03) Me And You Baby (Picao Y Tostao) [Mongo Santamaria]
04) Mambo Mucho Mambo [Machito & His Afro-Cuban Orchestra]
05) Jamay [Xavier Cugat & His Orchestra]
06) Mama Papa Tu [Mongo Santamaria]
07) La Vida es Una Lenteia [Unaesta]
08) Expansions [Lonnie Liston Smith]
09) Aguanile [Irakere]
10) Maracaibo Oriental [Beny Moré]
11) Latin Flute [Deodato]
12) Mambo Gozón [Tito Puente]
